Kids and Ponds
We wanted to take time to thank Kate Conway, of the Cape Cod Times and New Bedford Stadard Times, for her article on Koi Ponds and children. Kate recently interviewed a couple of our members for an article she was writing for the Sunday 8/6/11 edition. We will repost the article or link to it once proper permission is received. Our ponds are a constant source of enjoyment to us, but there is nothing more important than the safety of our children. Children should NEVER be left alone near ponds!
When your family or friends are visiting make it clear to all parents that the children must be accompanied at all time when out at the pond. Children by nature are fascinated with the colors and movement of ornamental fish. They will want to get closer to the pond to get a better look. This put them on rocks which may be wet or unstable. Never allow their parents to tell you don't worry my child is a great swimmer. Also, kids will throw ANYTHING and EVERYTHING into the water. They don't do this to harm the fish or out of malice, but depending upon what they toss in it could be deadly to the fish.

Who we areA small group of Koi enthusiasts gathered together on a bitter cold day the previous February to lament the fact that Rhode Island and Southeastern Massachusetts did not have a local Associated Koi Club of America Chapter to join for education and support. The Rhode Island and Southeastern Massachusetts Koi Club was established August 16, 2004. We later amended our name to Rhode Island and Massachusetts Koi Club. The goal of our club is to stimulate interest, appreciation and skills of Koi keeping. We researched, planned, applied for and were accepted as the 102nd individual Associated Koi Club in North America. Our club meets monthly from April through November and would love to have you as a guest at one of our meeting. We think you will enjoy your time with us and join. |
